Death Cafe Projects are Livelier Than You Would Think (#3/115)

A 'Death Cafe', the place you can go if you are dying to talk about the morbid facts of death.

The idea came from Swiss sociologist Bernard Crettaz who opened 'Café Mortal' in 2004. This was the first ever pop up cafe where groups met up to talk about death. After being founded over ten years ago, Crettaz has since set up hundreds of cafes across Switzerland.

The trend of talking about death soon caught on with over two thousand lively cafes popping up around the globe since the movement first began.

There is yet to be a permanent death cafe, however, Jon Underwood UK 'death specialist' has worked throughout his career to develop a series of projects surrounding the idea of the acceptance of death. After being inspired by the work of Crettaz, Jon started his own death cafe in his home in 2010 with the help of his mother, psychotherapist Sue Barksy Reid.

Jon Underwood explained, "We don't want to shove death down people's throats."

"We just want to create an environment where talking about death is natural and comfortable."

Jon has gone onto inspire others across the world, in countries such as the US, Germany and New Zealand.

Health Councilor for widowed women Audrey Pellicano, hosts death cafes in New York. Having worked as a grief councilor for several years she recognized the benefits of sharing grievances and how de-stigmatizing death allows for people to become accepting of their own life ending.

Death cafes are for most still an unknown intriguing concept, however they are increasingly common. Next month Manchester, Darlington, Hampstead and Brighton will all play host to death cafes.

You can find out where the nearest cafes to you are on their website!

Spanking Children Creates Mental Health, Decreases IQ and Affects A Child's Trust

“To hit a child with the hand, usually several times on the bottom as a punishment,” this is more commonly known as spanking.  It has become more socially unacceptable to lay a hand on a child however what happens behind closed doors is leading to almost 7,000 children needing protection from physical abuse.

The subject of spanking has become much of a public debate after comments from US senator and presidential candidate Ted Cruz stated that voters will spank Hillary Clinton, the former Secretary of State for supposedly lying about the Benghazi scandal that took place in 2012, just like he spanks his five-year-old daughter when she lies.

Spanking can be identified as a form of corporal punishment, which the British legal system views as an outdated form of discipline.  However, the legal regulations in the British legal system are more of a grey area than strictly implemented rules. Sweden was the first country to outrightly outlaw physical punishment of children in 1979.  Now more than 30 countries have banned corporal punishment, however with influential members of US state publically supporting spanking, mixed messages of morality are being sent out to not only parents but to children.

However, Elizabeth Gershoff a professor at The University of Texas who is known to be the leading researcher on spanking currently within the US has studied the form of discipline for the last 15 years and concluded "there's no study that I've ever done that's found a positive consequence of spanking." A study conducted by Gershoff based on research collated over two decades confirmed children that are spanked are more likely to display anxiety, depression, aggression and drug abuse.

In fact, numerous studies have established the extremely damaging effects spanking has on a child. The Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario conducted a study which evidence suggests such corporal punishment causes ‘cognitive impairment and long-term developmental difficulties,’ therefore decreasing a child’s IQ.

But not only do children suffer from developmental difficulties, mental  health is a significant consequence children face from being spanked by their parents. Darcia Narvaez Professor of Psychology studying the immense effects spanking has on children. A child’s relationship with their parent Is effected immeasurably by striking a child. Taking to physical abuse to punish a child not only undermines the trust a child has for their parent and thus means they mistrust trust others and their motives but it has proven to destroy a child’s mental health and therefore leading to an increase in criminal behaviour. From a young age children are easily influenced and look to their parents for guidance on how to behaviour in social setting, and parents physically punishing their children are not a positive example at all.

Despite these study results being openly published, a poll carried out by Parents.com found that 56% of parents admit to occasionally spanking their children.  Neo-Traditionalist, Domenick Maglio has outrageous view on the subject of spanking. “Outlawing any spanking because some parents could possibly harm their child also means we should make it illegal for parents to kiss their children as that might lead to incest.” It is these outdated views that are preventing the elimination of spanking and child abuse.

Parents may begin by spanking their children as a form of discipline; however, this has the ability to lead to further more brutal forms of punishment. Collette Elliot experienced extreme abuse as a child and now as a parent herself, recalls the detrimental affects her treatment had on her even 20 years on.

“As a child I had to deal with three kinds of abuse  – physical, mental and sexual.  Of the three it was the mental abuse that was worst, because it has stayed with me. My life has been designed around the mental torture I endured.”

But whose responsibility is it to monitor the treatment of children in and out the home? Absolutely everyone’s. Charities such as the NSPCC provide helplines that offer support for those worried about a children and can offer information about child protection.

If you believe a child to be in immediate danger contact the NSPCC on 0808 800 5000 or call 999 for police assistance.

CUNNINGham 'Celebrity' BB Speculation

'Sticks and stones may break my bones but tax payers will always fund me,' the humble words found on Josie Cunningham's twitter profile appearing more as a sick joke rather than a comical tweet.

This is a former state dependant single mum of two, with a third on the way, turned 'entrepreneur' who is known best for being the first woman to get breast enhancements on the NHS. Which appear to have been operated on for cosmetic reasons only. However, the controversial keyboard warrior claims to haters they were a necessity for her due to the depression she suffered from with having '0 per cent breast tissue.'

Glamour Model Josie Cunningham wants to represent the UK at Eurovision 2015? Photo : ww.zimkasi.comAlthough a topic for discussion she is lacking in a CV that would constitute a celebrity status fit for Celebrity Big Brother.
Nevertheless she confirmed rumours of being asked to enter the Celebrity Big Brother however shortly afterwards Cunningham announced herself pregnant (with a suspected homeless man) ruling her out of the £100,000 deal completely.

Later the 'celebrity' took to twitter to slander the popular Channel 5 program arguing that the job offer was not of a large enough sum. However, the real question is how have Channel 5 seen her as a suitable candidate for the program when Cunningham has humiliated the NHS and used social media platforms, particularly Twitter, of which she was suspended from, to cause such controversy. Surely if Twitter do not deem her socially acceptable nor a celebrity (as she lacks a 'verified account' gained by celebrity status) Channel 5 shouldn't either?

CBB's Questionable Antics

Previously questionable CBB housemates have included Danielle O'Hara known best for losing her Miss Great Britain title after featuring in Playboy nude. Whilst also being  rumoured to having had romantic relations with one of her pageant's judges. Jade Goody also appeared on CBB after originally gaining fame through her appearance on (non-celebrity) Big Brother as an unruly housemate. She caused critics to question the show after airing her particularly racist and radical actions. This bares the question, is Celebrity Big Brother merely running out of willing celebrities to become housemates? And surely we cannot consider characters like Josie Cunningham CBB worthy? Evidently the show is not looking for role models as housemates.

CBB 2014 Speculations

CBB 14 Line Up?

Celebrity Big Brother, starting tomorrow, Monday 18th August promises to be as spectacular and controversial as always, with a speculated line up that appears to be both comical and explosive for all to watch. Entering the house could be Gogglebox's posh pair, Steph and Dom Parker and self-confessed pro-drinker and singleton George Gilbey.

And although Cunningham won't be creating controversy in the house the most out spoken posh totty on television, Katie Hopkins could be doing that for her. Of course the show wouldn't be a proper CBB line up without an America and this year they appear to be pulling out all the stops and taking into consideration social media's demands by possibly bring with Bieber's best bud and full time American Youtuber Bradtheladlong, Brad Long to our screens.

We need not worry whether Cunningham is entering the house as it has been confirmed that she is (due to her pregnancy) unfit to do so. Nevertheless, the fame addict announced her willingness to abort her pregnancy in order to secure her spot on the show. Thankfully, producers withdrew the chance of any potential appearance of Jodie on the 2014 show.

Benefit Scrounger Turned Entrepreneur

Since her story of her breast enhancement hit the headlines Jodie has been inundated with media calls and job prospects/opportunities giving her the financial stability to now come off of benefits and secure a job within 'media.'
Her latest venture is just as shocking as expected with her new dating site inspired by Katie Price (her online nemesis, who she hinted to "P.S. See you on the site Katie") called PullThePig. A dating site for 'achievable looking women' guaranteeing a higher success rate than mainstream dating. Josie's own website has been criticised just as much with grammatical errors and spelling mistakes making her an easy target for critics.

#CareerAdvice

Suddenly, Cunningham now finds the time to use Twitter to deliver 'career advice' to young girls who received their A-level results on the 14th of this month.
Giving advice: The pregnant mother of two, who previously worked a stint as a £1,000-a-night prostitute, told female students across Britain 'not to worry' if their exam results were not quite what they were hoping for

However, Cunningham swears to have no bad intentions when provoking the public and confirms that a tell all documentary
Sparking outrage: The wannabe model tweeted: 'Good luck to everyone getting your A-level results today. Girls don't worry if ur results are poor - you can always (cont). have a career getting your t***s out or escorting'series on Channel 4 will open the publics eyes to her reality as well as the truth behind why and how she had breast enhancements on the NHS.

As expected the criticism Josie gains from social media is extensive and brutal with tweets from haters asking "Give us back Robin Williams and take Josie instead" after she had made light of actor Robin Williams suicide shortly after he died. Others picked up on her appearance claiming that she is proof that "surgery can't cure ugly." But the question is when are the tweets too much as one enraged twitter user posts "Please do the world a favour and just kill yourself you worthless vile disgusting scum."
Seemingly Cunningham has received death threats on a daily basis but she reacting rationally tweeting "I'm a vile person yet you are wishing an attack on a pregnant woman."

Latest Revelation, Birthing Fame

Josie may not be helping herself as more and more she is receiving bad press due to the scandal that is now her pregnancy. The 'entrepreneur' and soon to be mum of three came up with another business venture which saw her birth being filmed and made available on DVD .However this admittedly absurd idea was quickly shut down.

Cunningham did not let this ruin plans to financially benefit from the birth of her third child as other plans secures her £40,000. Four fans have paid a combined total of £30,000 to have front row seats to the birth whilst Josie will be live on Skype to an audience of 50 viewers who each have paid £200 for the on screen action.

When addressed to about this business idea she claimed that for "such a magical experience it is a bargain" of which she says merely resembles One Born Every Minute. Her latest tweets also see her planning the auctioning off of her placenta shortly after the birth of the child.

The madness never appears to end in the world of Josie Cunningham, however we do know for certain that with £40,000 spare cash and a face that is more recognisable now than ever before, she will not be leaving the public eye anytime soon, just as long as her obscene shock tactics keep on coming.

Insomnia: The Awakening Truth.

Calling yourself an insomniac may be a commonly phrased way of explaining the lack of sleep you get from time to time. However for some it is a reality, a condition that controls peoples lives.

It is reported that three in ten Britons suffer from insomnia- a condition that can be medically defined as a persistent disorder that can make it hard to fall asleep, hard to stay asleep or both, despite the opportunity for adequate sleep. Thus leading sufferers' feeling unrefreshed, which takes a toll on the ability to function during the day.

Causes of insomnia can be due to stress anxiety, drug use and depression, furthermore, experts now say that it is a hereditary condition.

Unlike short term unblissful bouts of sleep, chronic insomnia can effect the relationships of those surrounding the sufferer.

Everyone has had an experience of sleep deficiency of which results in mood swings, uneasiness and an inability to concentrate. But it is becoming a more common struggle to a large amount of people due to the desirable internet. Those who are over actively comprising their sleep to satisfy their technological cravings are allowing their bodies to become subject to a regular unscheduled sleep patterns. Before more modern times forcing your body to relax and ease itself into a comforting sleep was an easier process. But now with the internet at large our sleep is forever being threatened.

The internet allows us to break down any sense of a routine, (especially for teenagers,) leading to drowsiness during the day and unmanageable alerted states in the more unsociable early hours of the morning. We are only leading ourselves as a technologically advanced world astray to to the natural inner workings of our body clocks.

Insomniacs help yourselves. Tune out of your headphones. Shut down your devices and allow your body to reiterate how blissful the luxury of an undisturbed good nights sleep really is!
